This is one of those times that I would drop everything if I had the chance for a “second Monday” ticket to Wimbledon! All of these jaw-dropping match-ups all on one day. I would be in heaven.
But even in heaven there would still be Wimbledon round of 16 picks to make. And man are there some great matches set for tomorrow.
Gasquet versus Murray
Danger Will Robinson! I mean danger Andy Murray! This will be Andy’s trickiest match so far. Richard has quietly won all of his matches without doing a set. He’s playing loose and comfortable tennis. If Andy doesn’t use the crowd to his advantage to get on top of his French opponent early it could be a tough one for him. But I still see Murray coming through this one no matter how tough given his confidence AND the venue.
Venus versus Pironkova
Another dangerous match against the woman who tool her out last year. Venus is playing well but sometimes you’re never sure who will show up in her matches. The good Venus or the bad Venus who can’t close out points. Let’s hope for the first.
Rafa versus JMDP
Rafa will have his hands full against Juan Martin. The Argentine is not known for his grass court prowess, and has struggled in earlier matches. But no one can deny his ball striking and his ability to serve his way out of trouble. Rafa has played well and got out of a tricky match against Muller in straight sets. This will be his strongest test yet. But his experience will help him immensely and he should be able to get through this match.
Serena versus Marion
On court 1 the easy favorites are Novak and Roger. Serena will have her hands full against Bartoli however. I initially picked Neroli to win this match. Now I’m not so sure. Serena has improved with each round while Marion has had back to back 3 setters. If Serena comes out sharp this match will be hers. Otherwise Marion will get into her ball-striking grove early and it will get very complicated.
Maria is playing well and should get through easily. Cibulkova will challenge Caroline greatly, but Caroline is playing fantastic and almost error-free tennis. She should get through this match. The last American male Mardy Fish? It will be a tall order for him to best Tomas Berdych. But he could pull out the upset depending on Berdych’s first serve percentage and mental state.
Victoria and Feliciano should both come through their matches. I know it’s bad of me but I want Vika to go down soon because of the whole grunting thing. I don’t want to listen to that sound next Saturday!
Jo Wilfried versus David
Ferrer will probably go down to Jo Wilfried Tsonga on Monday. Tsonga is playing well on grass this year and playing well in this tournament. Ferrer just doesn’t have anything other than his strong baseline game to take him deeper into this tournament where you need so much more than that.
Bernie Tomic versus Xavier Malisse
Tough call on this one. After all, who would ever have picked Tomic over Soderling? Tomic has notched improbable wins already this past week so you never know. His mix and match game allows his opponents no rhythm. If he keeps his focus and gets the X man out of his game and rhythm on his groundies he could pull off another upset.
Going out on a slight limb for some, here are my picks to make it to the quarters:
