CLAIMING THE TITLE: GAY OLYMPICS ON TRIAL: an award winning 30 min documentary on the history of GAY GAMES will be shown on KQED-TV PRIDE SUNDAY - 26 June - 7PM.
In 1982 a San Francisco athletic group headed by Tom Waddell MD (himself a medal winning Olympian) organized an athletic and arts competition for LGBT people from around the world based on the Olympic model but stressing "personal best as an out person". The multi day event was named "Gay Olympics". This was immediately challenged by the International Olympics Committee and ended with the US Supreme Court denying the usage of Gay Olympics, thus the origin of Gay Games. This legal defeat challenged the role of gay and lesbian people in sports. This video documents that history.
